Bone Health

Osteoporosis is a scary condition.  One false step and your life may be changed forever.  Bones seem like they are stable and constant; however they are made from cells that build bone and other cells that breakdown bone tissue.  The standard medical treatment is to give some form of bisphosphonates (Fosamax, Actonel and Boniva) which stays in your bones and kills off the cells that breakdown old, weak bone cells.  These drugs make your bones look stronger on tests, but do not substantially add to the strength of the bone.  Instead of waiting until bones become frail, take action now.  Dexa or bone scans can tell you how much bone you have left.  This test can only determine if you have lost additional bone over a long period of time.  There is a urine test available that that measures the amount of bone turnover you are experiencing.  Strategies can be employed for a 4-6 week trial and then a retest can determine if you are breaking down less bone.  There is no need to lose more bone before you know if the correct combination of treatment is working for you.
